About our Special Pretzels
Our generations-old recipe uses traditional Tyrolean techniques and ingredients, which makes our pretzels the most authentically and traditionally handcrafted, best tasting soft pretzels you will find on this side of the Atlantic!
All of our pretzels are baked fresh daily, hand rolled and hand dipped in small batches using centuries-old, European artisanal techniques. We begin by making a preferment (flour, yeast and water) the night before. We add this mixture to our dough in the morning when we bake our pretzels. This traditional technique adds incredible flavor and crumb texture to our distinctive pretzels.
We use all-natural ingredients in our pretzel dough: a proprietary blend of locally milled flour (unbleached and non-GMO), diastatic malt, butter (made in house or locally sourced), yeast, salt and water. We DO NOT use sugar or eggs/egg wash in our pretzels. By custom order, we can switch out the butter for oil to provide a dairy free/vegan pretzel.
We source as many of our ingredients as possible locally for our pretzels, dipping sauces, toppings and fillings: cheeses, meats, fruit, produce, locally milled grains, dairy, honey, herbs and more.
We do not sprinkle salt on our pretzels before baking. Salt absorbs moisture from the air and makes the crust soggy. Customers have the option of adding salt and other toppings at the moment of purchase or at home. Baking our pretzels without salt also makes them perfect for shipping and freezing.

Allergens/Cultural Dietary Laws
Our pretzels contain butter (dairy), flour (wheat/gluten) and diastatic malt (wheat/gluten).
Our homemade Genoese Pesto contains pine nuts (tree nut).
Our pretzel hot dogs are made from chicken so everyone can eat them (beef allergies, cultural dietary laws, etc)
Our pretzels DO NOT include eggs/egg wash.
Our pretzels DO NOT include tree nuts or peanuts.
Our pretzels are produced in a facility where foods containing tree nuts and peanuts occasionally are served. We make every effort to avoid cross contamination in kitchen processing and preparation areas.
Non Dairy/Vegan Options
We can accommodate requests for dairy free/vegan pretzels by switching out the butter for avocado or olive oil. Dairy free/vegan pretzels are available by custom order. Please indicate your preference for this option in the "details" comment box in our Order Form.
Locally Sourced Ingredients
We make a huge effort to source as many ingredients locally as possible:
A portion of our proprietary blend of four is locally milled.
Our butter is locally sourced or made in house.
Many of our meats, cheeses, fruits and vegetables are sourced from our fellow farmers market vendors, local farms and dairies and/or are grown by us directly.

For custom catering orders, please send us a message and we will be in touch within 48 hours, Monday through Thursday, to help you put together a spectacular pretzel bar.
Orders must be received a minimum of 3 days prior to your requested pick up date. A full week’s notice is much appreciated! If your request falls within the three days prior to pick up, please send us a message and we will try to include your order in our production schedule.
During extremely busy weeks when we also have multiple private events booked, your preferred pick up date may not be available. We apologize for the incovenience and thank you for your understanding.
We do not offer shipping at this time.

How to Add Pretzel Salt/Toppings
We do not sprinkle salt on our pretzels before baking.Salt absorbs moisture from the air and makes the crust soggy.Customers have the option of adding salt and other toppings at the moment of purchase or at home. Baking our pretzels without salt also makes them perfect for shipping and freezing.
To add salt to your pretzel, lightly wet the top of your pretzel with a little bit of water or butter (even more decadent!). You can use a pastry brush, atomizer or even your fingers. Press the pretzel into the salt or other toppings which you have placed on a plate. Flip the pretzel over and proceed with heating. Enjoy!

What are YOUR favorite toppings?
Reheating Instructions
Heat room temperature pretzels in a 350F oven or air fryer for 2-5 min until hot and pillowy soft. You also can heat the pretzels in a microwave at 15 second intervals until you reach the desired temp and softness. Stuffed pretzels and pretzel dogs are best heated by starting in the microwave for 15-20 seconds to heat the fillings and then placing them in an air fryer or oven at 350F for 1-2 minutes to crisp the crust.
Storage/Freezing Instructions
Our pretzels are baked without preservatives. They are ok on the counter at room temperature for a few days. We do not recommend storing them in the refrigerator as they are designed to pull moisture from the air and will make bread products stale quickly. If you do not eat your pretzels on the day you receive them, the best storage method is to freeze them.
Our pretzels freeze beautifully and reheat like you baked them yourself! Individually wrap each pretzel so they don't stick together and place in a ziplock freezer bag or other freezer safe container. To thaw, place pretzel on a plate and allow to come to room temperature. You also can heat the pretzel for 30 seconds in the microwave to burn off the frost on the crust and bring it to room temperature more quickly.

The Preppy Pretzel Bakery (by appointment on Thursday afternoon). 105 East Washington Street, Middleburg, VA 20117. Our commercial kitchen is located in a private building. Please note that we are not a walk-in bakery with retail hours.
Pick up, Refund and Rescheduling Policies
PICK UP, REFUND AND RESCHEDULING POLICIES
Your pick-up time slot is firm. If you know you are running late, please give us a call at 301-639-5554. Please note that we are very busy at markets and may not be able to pick up the phone.
If you are a no show, arrive at one of our market locations after the closing bell or arrive at our Middleburg location outside of your selected pick up time slot, you will need to reschedule pick up or forfeit your order. Forfeited orders are donated to food banks and individuals experiencing food insecurity.

Our Mission to Help Others
Daniela grew up in a family that has been very active for generations both here and abroad in helping those in need. When she wrote the business plan for The Preppy Pretzel, she was very specific that her mission in spreading her pretzel love was to give back as much as possible to the community.
Our mission statement: "to give away more than we take in, to feed the homeless and know them by name, to feed all those in uniform, to hire those who have a difficult time finding a job (mental/physical disabilities, age, housing challenged, etc), and when the pretzels hit the financial success of our dreams, to provide housing, counseling and jobs for kids who age out of foster care."
We currently employ several unhoused individuals in the Washington D.C. region to help at markets and events. We feed dozens of people facing food insecurity weekly in the neighborhoods where we sell our pretzels. Pretzel sales fund food distribution, tents, sleeping bags, phones, backpacks and other supplies to those in need in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. We work with local food kitchens and would love to get involved with more, We have a team of friends who have asked to help in our initiiatives called The Pretzel Angels.
We feed police officers, EMTs, security guards and anyone in uniform. If you happen to be in the area of one of our weekly markets, please stop by and get a hot, fresh pretzel! To those who serve, thank you so much for all you do!

Meet the Founder
Daniela Stephanz Anderson is an Italian/Austrian American who learned to make her traditional Laugenbrezels (Bavarian-style soft pretzels) as a child in the Tyrolean alps, where her Italian mother and Austrian Omama (grandmother) were born and raised along the Brenner Pass.
She owns a specialty tour company based in the Dolomites and offers workshops taught by celebrities in their niches embedded in out of the box immersion tours around the world. Her cooking school vacations in northern Italy have won several awards over the decades.
In 2020, the world ended up on lockdown and Daniela was forced to suspend her tours. She always has had a passion for cooking and baking, so she decided to open a bakery offering luxury cakes, pastries and breads highlighting her European upbringing and featuring her passion for art (she has a B.A. in fine art and art history)
Daniela has spent a lifetime perfecting her special pretzels and sharing them with family and friends, both here and abroad. They became an immediate hit with her bakery clients as well.
In 2022, she branded them as The Preppy Pretzel. In 2024, Daniela decided to focus exclusively on her pretzels, showcasing them at farmers markets, college campuses, military bases, festivals and offering catered pretzel bars at weddings and corporate/private events.
Each one of Daniela's handcrafted, gourmet pretzels is baked with love and passion! She and her team look forward to sharing her authentic, delicious soft pretzels with you! Prost!
